Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my dog's nails be clipped?

As a general guide, once a month works well for most dogs. That said, every dog is different. Active dogs who walk regularly on concrete naturally wear their nails down and may need less frequent clipping, while dogs with a more relaxed lifestyle may need it more often. Your groomer will be able to advise on the right frequency for your dog specifically.

What happens if my dog's nails are not clipped regularly?

Overgrown nails can cause real discomfort. When nails grow too long they push back against the paw as the dog walks, which affects posture and can lead to joint strain over time. In more severe cases, nails can curl and grow into the pad. Regular clipping is a small thing that makes a significant difference to your dog's comfort and long-term health.

My dog is nervous about nail clipping. Can you still help?

Yes, and this is something we deal with regularly. Our general approach to grooming is calm and unhurried, which helps enormously with nervous dogs. Where needed, we can bring in additional members of staff, adapt our tools and techniques, and take as many breaks as the dog needs, with plenty of praise and treats along the way. Most nervous dogs surprise their owners. Come and talk to us if you are unsure.

How do I know when my dog's nails need clipping?

The easiest sign is sound. If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors, they are ready for a clip. You can also check by looking at your dog standing naturally. If the nails are touching the ground or beginning to curve, it is time to book. When in doubt, bring them in and we will take a look.

What a great first time experience at Hackney Barkers! I had been wanting to take Elliot there for months until I was recently able to get an appointment. Staff couldn’t have been nicer and more professional. Elliot came out looking amazing and smelling heavenly. It probably is the best haircut he has ever had (he is now 3). Thank you!
