The course covers both City and Guilds levels, run as one continuous programme. You enrol once, and your place on both levels is secured from the start, so you move from Level 2 into Level 3 without a break.

Running both qualifications ourselves gives us the freedom to bring in advanced techniques as soon as you're ready for them, so your skills build steadily across the whole course. Every dog you work on is booked in for you in advance, matched to the coat types and styles you need at each stage.

You finish holding two City and Guilds qualifications, the Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants and the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming, qualified to work as a professional groomer or to start your own business.

What you'll learn

Bathing, drying and coat preparation Washing, drying and preparing different coat types correctly, the foundation every groom is built on.

Trimming and coat care Trimming to prepare a coat for styling, and managing tangles and matting across coat types.

Handling, moving and health checking Safe handling, moving and lifting, reading canine behaviour, and health checking a dog before and during a groom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience before I start?

No. The course is built for complete beginners. You start with the fundamentals and finish qualified to full professional standard. You'll need to be 16 or over to enrol.

Is the learning one-to-one or in a group?

Small group, with a maximum of two students per tutor. You get close, personal attention while still learning alongside someone at a similar stage.

Do I have to train a set number of days each week?

No. The schedule is built around your availability. You choose which days you train from the three available each week. One week you might do two days, the next none, then one the week after. Subject to availability, the pattern is yours.

When do courses run?

Because the schedule is flexible, you don't have to wait for a fixed term to begin. Get in touch and we'll find a start that works around you.

Will I groom the dogs myself, or watch?

You groom, from day one. We'll always demonstrate a technique first, then you'll do it yourself on a dog, under close guidance throughout.

Will I need to bring my own dog to practise on?

No, we provide every dog. We organise the schedule so you work on exactly the coat types and styles you need at each stage of your training. The learning is tailored to each student.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

No. We provide everything you need, from grooming equipment and a grooming overall to all your learning materials.

Will I have learnt enough to start my own business?

The course gives you the grounding to. Alongside the qualifications, we teach our own business unit covering how to work for yourself: choosing how you work, understanding your costs, pricing, tax, and finding and keeping clients. It gives you the knowledge to start confidently.
